Hammertoe Procedure by Gary W. Chessman DPM, FACFAS!
Gary W. Chessman DPM, FACFAS discusses surgical options for relief of painful hammer toe.
A hammer toe or contracted toe is a deformity of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the second, third, or fourth toe causing it to be permanently bent, resembling a hammer. View on YouTube
Regenerative Medicine What is regenerative medicine? Regenerative medicine combines the physical nature of a product with living cells.
Hammertoe is commonly caused by shoes that are too tight in the toe area or from wearing high heel shoes where the toe may be forced against the front of your shoe, resulting in an unnatural bending of your toe and a hammer-like or claw-like appearance. Hammertoe may also result from muscle imbalance, usually in combination with one or more other factors. Muscles work in pairs to straighten and bend the toes. If the toe is bent and held in one position long enough, the muscles tighten and cannot stretch out. Arthroplasty is one of the most common types of hammer toe surgeries. A small section of the bone from the affected joint is detached, and this should solve the problem. Arthrodesis, a type of hammer toe surgery for more severe cases, straightens the toes by fusing a small joint with a device (such as a pin) until it heals.

What you need
As you arrive in the office please bring...
Our Office: Please rest assured that you are our primary concern when you arrive in our office. It is our pleasure to
make every attempt to solve your problem as quickly and methodically as possible. Often it is necessary to work your problem through a pathway eliminating other diagnoses with conservative care as our starting point.
You may not need surgery but in the event that you should we will work together to try to enhance your chances of a successful outcome. This does require a team effort between you, the physician and his staff. Complications will occur and the best way to limit them to follow your instructions, if you have questions get them answered before your surgery. Complications may include infections that may lead to an amputation or a less than successful result. Make sure you have a clear understanding about "non-weight bearing and offloading and the use of devices that will help you accomplish this such as crutches, a walker or perhaps a wheelchair. Specific types of shoes may be ordered, make sure you get exactly what is ordered for you as this will definitely improve your chances for successful outcome. Some of these devices although they may be absolutely required may NOT be covered by your insurance.
Make sure you make arrangements to acquire what you need whether you have to pay out of pocket or not as these items would not have been ordered if not absolutely necessary for your success. Get your questions answered fully before you leave the office so you have a crystal clear understanding of what YOU need to do to enhance your chances of successful treatment!
